of the first presidential debate between governor romney of massachusetts and president obama. you see both men being greeted by their wives on stage. even this portion of the debate is negotiated ahead of time by the campaigns in terms of which members of their family will be joining them on stage. this is, these these are negotiated down to this level of detail. in terms of how the overall debate unfolded, i personally do not know who won this debate. i do feel that we saw this debate format die a very painful death on camera tonight. the contrast between the candidates was stylistic as much as substantive. president obama i think calm and basically explanatory tonight. governor romney, more hyper, and i don't mean that in a negative way, just sort of more amped, more assertive. and that manifests in a way that the debate format was just dismantled. the format and i think the moderator, with all due respect to mr. lehrer dismantled. this is one of those debates, you could predict the score more by time of possession in terms of who was speaking more. then you could by any other individual pla

and counting until the presidential debate tonight. mitt romney, he is gaining in two swing states. could this be romney's springboard? romney has whittled the president's lead, take a look. he's whittled the president's lead in the two percentage points in virginia. this is according to a poll released today by marist college, the wall street journal and also nbc news. two-point lead for obama, that's down five points last month. keep in mind we're talking virginia, that's 13 electoral votes there. and check it out, similar story for you in florida. 29 electoral votes there. now, a one-point, one-point lead for obama, down from four points in september. we should mention here that poll shows the president still with the seven-point lead in ohio. we can't forget about ohio. but speaking nationwide here, the president's lead, in our cnn poll of polls, you can see it here, stands at 3 percentage points, unchanged. as we noticed today, kind of interesting, the president has gained one point and romney dropped one point. this is the gallup national tracking poll. obama with a six-point lead t

showdowns between president obama and governor romney, and the one and only vice-presidential debate. well, today it is all about the how the candidates performances on that stage in denver could shake up this race going forward. let's talk about it with angela mcglowan, fox news political analyst and cory elands, former communications advisor to president obama and senior vice president for fox global. angela, you say mitt romney won this thing hands down. what does it do for his campaign? >> what does it do for his campaign? there will be more fund-raising and american people got to see mitt romney at his best with his strengths. he was aggressive, precise and focus and spoke with clarity. whereas obama at some times look a bit bewildered. i wanted to see a really good debate. obama was very passive. how do we move forward? this raises the bar for romney and for obama. so i think our next debate is going to be a little more livelier, jon. jon: cory, even big obama supporters like bill maher, bill maher tweeted out during the debate that it looks like president obama doesn't even realize
